Counseling is a talking therapy that focuses on increasing your psychological well-being. At the end of the process you will have a greater sense of self-awareness and be better equipped to cope with the future.
You can come to counseling for many reasons. You may be going through a crisis and cannot see a way through it. You may be experiencing the loss of a loved one from your life through a relationship break up, a divorce, or an admission of extramarital relations. You may be worried about your health or struggling to come to terms with the health of someone you are close to. You may have acknowledged a lack of motivation or distancing yourself from your friends and family. You may feel stuck or lost in your career and contemplating a change.
You may be struggling to deal with events in the past. You may have been victim to an experience that has disturbed you, or you may have witnessed an event that was particularly distressing. You may have failed to gain a sense of closure from an incident in the past.
You may be concerned about the future. You may feel lost or directionless in your current life situation. You may need to make importance decisions and are worried about the outcomes of those decisions. You may feel constrained by your life choices and want to regain a sense of freedom. You may feel unfulfilled and aim to feel a sense of purpose. You may feel unmotivated and powerless to make changes in your life.
A counselor will listen and help guide you through a process to make sense of and resolve any issues you may have. The counselor provides a non-judgemental safe space for you to express your emotions and support you through the process of personal growth and development.
At Counseling Perspective we utilise different types of therapies and tailor each session to the individual and their needs. We understand that the relationship between a client and a therapist is one of the most influential aspects of counselling, therefore we strive to build supportive and non-judgmental relationships.
We view health from a holistic standpoint, taking into consideration the mind and the body. We have recommended Natruopaths, Nutritionists and Health Coaches who we can work alongside to help clients.
We understand that a first session can be daunting, especially if you are new to counseling. We endeavor to make you feel comfortable and at ease during the first sessions as ask questions to understand what has brought you to counselling. We may discuss some of the events that have led to your decision to start counselling and identify how our services will best help you. You are welcome to ask us any questions you have during the sessions.
In an ideal world we would be able to resolve all your issues and problems within one session. However, this is not realistic as many issues have developed over a number of years, and therefore can take time to resolve. The number of sessions you need will vary based on many factors. Some people will attend weekly sessions for years, others may feel the benefits from as little as three or four sessions, and some people choose to attend biweekly sessions over a longer period of time. You and your counsellor can discuss an appropriate course based on your needs. Ultimately the structure will be your choice.
